Payments by Credit Card

Like many translators, I have recently implemented an option for clients to pay me by credit card. I did so using PayPal's online payment system, which enables you not only to create invoices using their web interface, but also to receive translation payments by anyone who does not own a PayPal account. This has some seriously useful advantages for freelance translators / agencies:

  • You can insist on payment the same day or immediately before/after delivering the final translation.
  • Even clients with no PayPal account can instantly pay you, without having to make international transfers (and be charged for them).
  • None of the parties are obliged to give out bank details to people they do not know.

Especially with first-time clients, it is always better to be on the safe side and I usually insist on them paying before I send them the translation. I have had some adverse reactions to this, but only accounting for a small percentage of clients (an no-one, so far, has refused to pay in advance - after all, it only takes them a few minutes to receive the finished translation in their inbox so there is not much time to worry). What I have realized, though, is that PayPal charges surprisingly high commissions for these kinds of  payments. What is your opinion on this? Which payment methods do you use or would you recommend? Do you know of alternative web services which process credit card payments while charging lower commissions?
