Most translators are aware of the excellent Linguee website. While it’s limited in terms of the language combination it offers (Spanish-English, German-English, English-French, English-Portuguese, for some reason…), it does its job exceptionally well, in fact, it’s dictionary and translation memory all rolled into one. Or, as they call themselves, a Dictionary and Translation Search engine.
Of course, as translators, what we really want is for terminology lookup to be as fast and efficient as possible, and therefore, a variety of tools are available for one-click terminology research, like IntelliWebSearch, a tool which brands itself as “the ultimate terminology research experience”, but is brought down by its horrific interface (and website).
The good people behind Linguee are going the same route, and have released a beta version of their desktop software, which as far as I understand will soon be available to professional translators on a subscription basis. (That’s right, not free.) I was lucky enough to find an invite to their beta program in my inbox the other day, just as I was working on a particularly tough project with loads of technical terminology, giving me the perfect chance to test its real-world credentials.
What Linguee Professional does is very simple. Anywhere you are, just click into a word of phrase and the program will look it up in the huge Linguee database. Nothing wrong there. The result is presented in a nice little speech bubble above the text (and it works in SDL Trados Studio, too!). However, while the idea is good, the implementation, so far, is not. It has one or two additional benefits compared to just using the website. For example, there is need to mark the whole word, just click into it. When two words which stand next to each other are recognised, the corresponding result is shown instead of the single-word translation. So if you clicked into the word “table”, and the following word were “tennis”, Linguee Professional would be clever enough to understand that you were looking for the term “table tennis” and look that up for you.
One-click lookup in MS Word with a nice looking speech bubble.
However, at least at this early beta stage, there are a number of shortcomings/bugs which still need to be ironed out in order for this to be ready for prime time:
The website sometimes fails to load, even if you have a working internet connection.
While single-click lookup is great, it is not possible to mark two or more words for more precise term lookup, meaning that Linguee Professional tries to second-guess you too often.
The default keyboard shortcut is control+left mouse-click. Now try and select more than one file to attach to an email and you’ll see that it’s just replaced one of the most commonly used shortcut in Windows. While you can still change this in the settings, this is a terrible oversight on behalf of the programmers.
If you use a dial-up or USB modem, and your connection is not active at start-up, Linguee Professional will actually show an error message warning you that it has failed to connect to its server. A bit aggressive, I would think. I mean, give us a second to log onto that internet connection, okay?
Linguee Professional starts at five euros per month if you pay for a yearly subscription (and that’s for the slimmed-down “Premium” version). As things stand today, it is not worth the money for something that is basically just a wrapper for their (freely accessible) website, just like the worst mobile apps that are produced by the bucket load today. The bottom line: If you bring it to the desktop, give it some desktop features, otherwise the only thing we are doing here is pay a monthly fee to access a free website.
Let’s be careful here because this is not the finished version yet but in terms of a beta review, I would have to say that this is not good enough.
You can give the Linguee Professional beta a spin here. Take it for a test drive and let us hear your opinion in the comments.

Last year, Google started to test a new sidebar that offers useful information about your query. As the Wall Street Journal mentioned in a recent article, Google will soon "present more facts and direct answers to queries at the top of the search-results page". There's a large database of entities and each one has a list of relevant attributes.
For example, you could search for [California] and Google displays the capital of the US state, a list of important cities, attractions, the Secretary of State, a map and a snippet from Wikipedia. Google continues to test the info panes, but the interface has been updated, the main thumbnail is smaller and there's more information that's displayed. For singers, Google displays a long list of songs and some important albums.
Google's experimental sidebar is similar to Wikipedia's infobox, "a fixed-format table designed to be added to the top right-hand corner of articles to consistently present a summary of some unifying aspect that the articles share and sometimes to improve navigation to other interrelated articles". It includes structured information about your query, related queries and links to all the topics that are mentioned. Google will look more like an encyclopedia.

Google Docs has a new feature that lets you find more information about some of the words from a document and also add content from the Web. The research sidebar can be enabled from the Tools menu or by using the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+R (Cmd +Opt+R for Mac). You can also select one or more words from the document, right click and select "Research" from the menu.
The sidebar includes the top Google search results, image search results, facts, maps, reviews and famous quotes. Click the icon from the search box to restrict the results to images and quotes.
When you mouse over a Web search results, you can preview it, insert a link or cite it. For example, you can select "Google" from a document, press Ctrl+Alt+R, mouse over the top result and click "insert link" to add a link to Google's homepage.
Restrict the results to images to quickly add an image using drag and drop. Google also has a specialized search engine for quotes and you can also add them to your document.
Search for a famous person, a place, a concept or any other entity and Google will display a list of attributes above the search results.
Maybe Google will also add features like translation and definitions to the research sidebar, so you can quickly find them.

Google's OneBox for instant answers has a new interface that emphasizes the results. Google now displays the answer on the first line and the font size is bigger.
The Q&A OneBox now shows multiple answers for questions like [What is the cast of The Help?] or queries like [the dictator actors].
Until now, Google used the following template: "Best guess for ... is ...".
Just because Google no longer mentions that the answer is a "guess" doesn't mean that it's always accurate.

As previously anticipated, Google introduced Knowledge Graph, a new way to handle queries that replaces keywords with objects. It's like replacing a dictionary with an encyclopedia.
"The Knowledge Graph enables you to search for things, people or places that Google knows about—landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more—and instantly get information that's relevant to your query. This is a critical first step towards building the next generation of search, which taps into the collective intelligence of the web and understands the world a bit more like people do," explains Google.
For now, you'll only notice a new info pane in the right sidebar that shows more information about your query. Google's graph has 500 million objects and 3.5 billion facts, so you'll see the new section quite often. Google shows a small thumbnail, a snippet from a Wikipedia article, a few relevant facts and some related queries. It's just like a Wikipedia infobox automatically generated using data from the Web and that's smart enough to only show important facts and hide the things people won't need.
The new info panes will also help users disambiguate queries just like Wikipedia's disambiguation pages help users find the right articles.
Wikipedia's internal links help you find other interesting articles. Google also adds links to all the other objects from the graph.
Some may say that Google borrowed too many ideas from Wikipedia, but that's one step that could help search engines evolve. Understanding the relation between entities and learning their attributes allows Google to answer more complicated questions and get better search results. As Mashable says, "the transition from a word-based index to this knowledge graph is a fundamental shift that will radically increase power and complexity."
Google "begun to gradually roll out this view of the Knowledge Graph to U.S. English users. It's also going to be available on smartphones and tablets". If you don't see the new features yet, check back later.

There are some forms of bad eye sight which can only be efficieantly corrected with contact lenses not with glasses -if you suffer from this you are not fit for police service (in Austria also not for Army service - at least in my days).
If you are wearing contact lenses just because you feel that it looks better and glasses will do as well to correct your eyesight you must provide a certificate and can enter the police service.
The reason behind that is that contact lenses can be lost in service or should not be worn in certain circumstances (maybe under a protection mask) so if you can use glasses as backup you will be fine if not you might be a threat for your comrades or the public.German to English translation (fluent speakers only, no net translations... thanks)? If eyeglasses or contacts are used, we need a medical certificate. If visual efficiency is only made by contacts, this leads to one being unfit for police service.
Danke, physical...und gl眉ckliches neues Jahr.German to English translation (fluent speakers only, no net translations... thanks)? Nativexile got it, a bit clearer though:
If eyeglasses or contacts are worn, we need a medical certificate. If visual efficiency is only achieved with the contacts, the individual will be unfit for police services. If glasses or contact lenses are worn, we need a doctor's certificate. If the sight correction can only be made using contact lenses, this will disqualify you from police service.
It means if you can *only* wear contact lenses you will not be able to work on the force. If you can wear both, you must provide a medical certificate.

The Indian Bloggers directory (version 1.0) has been around for several years now but I need your help to take it to the next level.
Please go to indianbloggers.org/me and add your blog(s). This step should not take more than a minute and you should add (or rather claim) your blogs even if they are already part of the existing directory.
You may submit regular blogs as well as video channels and audio podcasts to the new directory.
All submissions will be manually reviewed, like before, but the upcoming version will offer even more visibility to your blogs among other things. And it won’t just showcase the best blogs from India but also the people (or bloggers) who are writing these blogs.
Also, the minimum criteria for including your blog in the directory is:
Your blog has been around for at least 5 months.
You have published at least 30 articles on your blog.
Your blog is active and has a decent readership.
You can follow the Indian Bloggers directory on Twitter and Facebook for updates. Thanks!

I'm reading a WWII book atm and its got a picture in it of one man, one woman, each holding a sign because one is apparently Jewish and they weren't supposed to be associating with each other....So apparently the SS made them each hold up a humiliating sign at a street corner and I'm trying to figure out what the signs say but my german is so shoddy that I want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding them, especially the second one. Sustaining organization or keeping organized at dwelling is very important as a result of the home is where your sanctuary is. If the home is totally messy and screwed up, likelihood is, your time for rest and relaxation would be affected and you would end up having nothing of that at all.
To prepare your property life, there are sensible ways and tips about how they can be done. Read on and learn how you yourself might start the trouble now.
1. Make an organizer. It can be in the type of a calendar, or you might preserve a small board for it. The organizer organizes your schedule. It?s assumed that you?re?Tapping Old Networks through Social Media also busy at work. Sustaining a balance between work life and household life is hard. Organizers should include all the dates and appointments you have, so there could be no engagements to be missed out.
2. The fridge could be a message board between household members. However you?ll want to type out the notes on the fridge door, throw out those already not relevant so the ref door wouldn?t seem like a replica of your office desk.
3. Maintain or preserve regular time for children and family. For instance, set Sundays as a day for activities with them. Make it a regular or a practice that you simply and your family meet out and have enjoyable collectively throughout Sundays.
4. Clean the home regularly. De-clutter the house of all the unnecessary and unuseful tools and materials that only tend to pile up and eat precious space. That approach, people around the house can be given ample motion area to roam around and move extra freely.
5. Manage and type issues out in the home in keeping with classifications and uses. Utensils in the kitchen must be stored throughout the utensils drawer and shouldn?t be seen within the bookcases, for instance.
Moreover, the best way to probably arrange your private home life is to focus on getting organized. You can do it for you might be actually determined.

To contact us Click HERE Virtual colonoscopy effective screening tool for adults over 65Public release date: 23-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Linda Brooks lbrooks@rsna.org 630-590-7762 Radiological Society of North America
OAK BROOK, Ill. Computed tomography (CT) colonography can be used as a primary screening tool for colorectal cancer in adults over the age of 65, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.
Some previous medical studies have found no significant difference in the diagnostic accuracy of CT colonography, also known as "virtual colonoscopy," and traditional optical colonoscopy. This study looks at whether both exams are as effective for adults over 65 as they are for adults between 50 and 65 years of age.
In the study, C. Daniel Johnson, M.D., professor and chair of radiology at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a team of researchers conducted a follow-up analysis of data from the National CT Colonography Trial, in which 2,600 patients over the age of 50 underwent both virtual and optical colonoscopies at 15 centers around the country.
Dr. Johnson's team analyzed trial data from 477 patients over the age of 65 and 2,054 patients between the ages of 50 and 65 who were screened with the two procedures for clinically significant pre-cancerous growths called polyps. Patients in the study were comprised of both men and women at predominantly an average risk for colorectal cancer.
Cancerous lesions 1 centimeter or larger were found in 6.9 percent of patients in the 65 and older group and in 3.7 percent of the younger patients.
There was no significant difference in the accuracy of CT colonography for the detection of large and intermediate-sized cancers in the older participants compared to the younger participants. Sensitivity and specificity among the older and younger groups were 0.82 and 0.83 and 0.92 and 0.86, respectively.
"We found no statistical difference in the diagnostic performance between the two patient groups," Dr. Johnson said. "This is good information for patients of any age, as they can consider CT colonography as a valid option for colorectal cancer screening."
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), a decline in colorectal cancer incidence rates over the last two decades is largely attributable to screening tests that allow polyps to be removed before they progress to cancer.
"I don't believe there is any screening test that can intervene as early in the biology of the tumor as colorectal cancer screening," Dr. Johnson said. "We have the opportunity to detect pre-malignant polyps, remove them and prevent an entire class of cancers."
Despite the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening, the ACS estimates that only half of the U.S. population over the age 50 is being screened as recommended for the disease. Experts point to cost and a lack of access to health care as contributing factors.
Although both optical and virtual colonoscopy procedures typically require the use of laxatives to empty the colon prior to the test, there are major differences between the two exams.
In the traditional colonoscopy, an optical instrument called a colonoscope allows a physician to visually examine the colon and to remove polyps by passing a wire loop through the scope. In this procedure, the risk of perforating the bowel is higher and sedation is required.
"For the older patient, the risks of and recovery from sedation are issues," Dr. Johnson said.
Introduced in the 1990s, CT colonography produces cross-sectional, three-dimensional images of the entire colon and rectum. While the CTC exam itself is quicker to perform and about half the cost of the optical colonoscopy, it involves exposure to low doses of radiation and it must be repeated more often. When polyps 6 millimeters or larger are detected by CT colonography, the patient must undergo an optical colonoscopy to have them removed. In addition, incidental CT findings outside the colon might require additional follow-up.
"There isn't a fight between CT colonography and colonoscopy, but there is a fight in medicine against colon cancer," Dr. Johnson said. "We want patients to be screened. CT colonography is a preferred test for some patients and should be an option. Patients should talk to their doctor and choose the best option for them."

Virtual colonoscopy effective screening tool for adults over 65Public release date: 23-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Not content with simply matching the Micron / Intel effort, SanDisk and its partner Toshiba claim their new memory uses 19- rather than 20-nanometer cells in the production process. Shrinking the size is one thing, but SanDisk's new chips also use its X3 / three-bit technology. Most memory stores just two bits per cell; cramming in another means fewer cells, less silicon, more savings, cheaper memory, happier geeks. Analyst Jim Handy estimates that the price per gigabyte for the tri-bit breed of flash could be as low as 28 cents, compared to 35 for the Micron / Intel equivalent. Full details in the not-so-compact press release after the break.

The America's Next Top Model creator and host graduated with a certificate from the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Friday, Us Weekly can confirm.
PHOTOS: The love lives of supermodels
Banks, who dropped out of Loyola Marymount University to pursue modeling at age 17, enrolled in the prestigious program to better her brand.

"In order for my company to grow and be the best, and to reach these women, and to serve them, I needed the best," the Bankable Productions CEO told CBS News in 2011. "So I went to the best."
Banks, now 38, admitted that her decision to pursue higher education was met with skepticism at first. "When people have low expectations, you're just constantly going, 'Ta-da!' And they're like 'Wow!'" she said. "It doesn't take a lot to wow them."

Prior to her Harvard education, Banks was lauded for being the first African American woman to appear on the covers of GQ and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The California native has appeared in a handful of films (Life-Size, Coyote Ugly) and hosted her own talk show, The Tyra Banks Show, which ran from 2005-2010.

If you're looking for more features for Google Music, try the new Labs page. Google informs that "Google Play music labs are a testing ground for experimental features that aren't quite ready for primetime. They may change, break, or disappear at any time."
Right now, there are three experimental features available: desktop notifications for Chrome, HTML5 audio and 5-star ratings. If you enable 5-star ratings, thumbs ups and thumbs downs will be converted to 5 stars and 1 star. HTML5 audio "works in all browsers that support MP3 playback with HTML5 audio: Chrome, Safari 3.1+, and IE 9+" and replaces the hidden Flash player that's currently used.
After enabling desktop notifications, you should see an infobar that asks for permission. Click "allow" and Google Music will show a nice notification enhanced with a cover art thumbnail when a new song starts playing.

Gmail has never included an option to manage the attachments from the messages you've received. You can't see a list of PDFs received this month or a list of photos sent by one of your friends. Gmail's advanced search features let you find the messages that include PDF files or photos, but you have to open each message to see the files.
The people widget now shows more information about a contact: thumbnails of recent photos your contacts sent you. Clicking on a thumbnail opens the corresponding message.
For now, Gmail only shows the most recent 3 photos from a contact and doesn't let you see all of them. Maybe Gmail will integrate with the upcoming Google Drive and all the Gmail attachments will finally be searchable, easy to organize and share, just like Google Drive (Docs) files.

Chromebook users who install the latest Dev channel release of Chrome OS will be surprised to notice that Chrome OS looks more like a desktop operating system.
Google has been working on a new window manager called Aura that brings many features of a desktop OS. Chrome OS now has a desktop, a taskbar, apps are placed on the desktop, there's support for wallpapers and overlapping windows.
According to Chrome's engineers, Aura is a hardware-accelerated "user interface framework for Chrome UI" that offers "rich visuals, large-scale animated transitions and effects that can be produced only with the assistance of hardware acceleration". Aura is cross-platform and should "provide the foundation of a flexible windowing system and shell for Chrome and ChromeOS on a variety of form factors".
The latest Chrome OS release is only available for Samsung and Acer Chromebooks as Cr-48 Chromebooks will skip Chrome 19.
